Body color is white with three oblique broad dark brown bands, the first running from the top of the head through the eye to the abdomen, the second from the fourth dorsal spine to the posterior of the anal fin, and the third on the back and the adjacent dorsal fin (Ref. 4855). Juveniles have a longer, narrower "pennant" than adults as well as a double ocellus in the black portion of the anal fin (Ref. 37816).
