Typical of quiet waters in creeks and shorelines of larger rivers where there is low to moderate current. Found in slightly brackish waters at sea level and in waters up to 610 m elevation, though generally more abundant below 200 m. Food consists of fish scales, including those of other characins, cichlid and others, and aquatic insects (Ref. 36880).
