Inhabits the upper slope, on or near the bottom (Ref. 5578). Feeds mainly on mid-water bony fish, also squid, octopus, shrimp and brittle stars (Ref. 5578). Ovoviviparous (Ref. 205).

Western Pacific: Japan and Philippines, possibly elsewhere in the western Pacific (Ref. 31367). Recorded from off Shark Bay, Western Australia (Ref. 6871). Records from southern Africa possibly based on other species (Ref. 31367). Often confused with Etmopterus molleri and Etmopterus lucifer (Ref. 31367).
