Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-18; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 16 - 27. Body a little compressed, belly rounded, without pre-pelvic scutes, but a pelvic present with slender vertical arms. Snout pointed, lower jaw projecting slightly. Last two anal fin rays separate forming a distinct little finlet. This last feature identifies the species (found in no other clupeoid of the western Indian Ocean).
