Vertebrae: 12 - 120. This species is distinguished by the following characters: comparatively slender body, short head, pre-first dorsal length 48% TL; wide mouth, its width 0.53 in head length; very short, moderately flattened, broadly rounded snout; anterior nasal flaps not overlapping mouth posteriorly, narrowly lobate, inner margin with a deep notch; relatively small first dorsal fin; considerably larger than second dorsal fin, originates behind half of pelvic-fin base; relatively large and broad pectoral fins; relatively large anal fin; elaborate color pattern; speckled dorsal saddles; 3 lateral clusters of spots arranged into rosettes between paired fins; no dark lateral blotch between paired fins (Ref. 80388).
